Borussia Dortmund meets Manchester City on Wednesday. BVB meets an old friend who is becoming increasingly important.

Nobody at BVB needs to be warned about Erling Haaland. Even though it has now been more than three years since the goalscorer wore the black and yellow jersey, the memories of the Norwegian storm power are still fresh. Haaland stormed for Dortmund for two and a half years, scored 62 goals in 67 games and prepared 19 more goals. Within a few months he became the team’s figurehead. This Wednesday evening, Haaland will face BVB again in the Champions League (from 9 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online).

Haaland then moved to Manchester City in the summer of 2022. In England, some people were initially skeptical as to whether he could confirm the performances from the Bundesliga in the Premier League. Haaland responded with performances, breaking the goal record in his first season with 36 goals in a season.

The now 25-year-old striker continued to impress in the years that followed. After less than three and a half years, Haaland is already in 35th place on the Premier League’s all-time top scorer list, with Cristiano Ronaldo just five goals ahead of him.

How important Haaland is for Manchester City in the current season can be seen above all in one statistic. He has scored 13 goals in the current Premier League season. Five players follow in second place with one hit each. Haaland alone has scored more than twice as many goals as the rest of the team.

Burnley defender Maxime Estève scored two own goals in the duel against Manchester City. “Skyblues” fans recently joked online that Estève is the club’s second best goalscorer after Haaland.

The striker himself doesn’t care much about the hype surrounding him. “I’m just a Norwegian boy. I don’t think I’m special just because I score goals,” said Haaland about his role in the team. “I’m just Erling. It will always stay that way.”

He is particularly looking forward to seeing BVB again. “I still have friends there,” he said Tuesday. “I had a great time in Dortmund. It’s a great club with great people. I have so many wonderful memories of my time there.”
