The new supermarket in Eelderwolde officially opened its doors today. The construction of the supermarket was delayed several times and met with stiff resistance from local residents for years.

The plan for the supermarket of approximately 3,000 square meters had been on the table since 2010, but led to a lot of discussion in the Ter Borch district. Action group Stop Tynaarlo and several local residents, among others, are opposed to the arrival of the store, which they believe does not fit into the environment.

Only in 2019 did the city council decide that the supermarket could be built. Two years later, in 2021, a narrow majority of the council finally approved construction. However, several more procedures followed afterwards.

For example, residents started an emergency procedure with the Council of State because, according to them, too much nitrogen was being emitted. The judge later dismissed those objections, after which construction started in 2023.

Once the building was built, a lack of power caused the next delay. Grid operator Enexis was unable to directly connect the supermarket to the overcrowded power grid. BUN tried to gain priority through the courts, but was unsuccessful. The connection has now been completed and the store can open after years of delay.
