Thanks to an extremely strong Lena Lattwein, the footballers of VfL Wolfsburg are staying close to champions Bayern Munich. On Tuesday evening, the midfielder led the “Wolves” after falling behind to win 4-1 (0-1) at Union Berlin.

National player Lattwein was out injured for months. In Berlin, coach Stephan Lerch sent her back onto the field from the start for the first time – with success. In the second half she took control in front of 7,254 spectators. She scored the equalizer herself and made it 2-1.

“We needed time to get into the game. We didn’t manage to bring the clear solutions onto the pitch,” said Lerch, but added happily: “In the second half we created a lot more pressure and got a confident 4-1 win on the pitch.”

It was the seventh win of the season in the ninth game. The Lower Saxony team thus consolidated their second place in the women’s Bundesliga in the English week. The gap to the champions from Munich is still three points. FCB had previously won 6-0 (3-0) at 1. FC Nürnberg.

Union’s Halverkamps converts the corner directly

The Wolfsburg women had to grind their teeth on the “iron” defensive lines for a long time in the first half. The Berliners had the better chances. Even with significantly less possession of the ball, their lead in the 22nd minute was deserved: Antonia Halverkamps converted a corner straight away! VfL keeper Stina Johannes, who has only kept her goal clean in the league, first took a step forward and then could no longer fend off the ball.

Shortly after the break, Union almost made it 2-0 after a hair-raising loss of the ball by Svenja Huth in their own penalty area. Tomke Schneider immediately shot from a tight angle, but this time Johannes, who was rushing back, was on target (47′).

Lattwein plays big in the starting eleven comeback

It was thanks to Lattwein that the Wolfsburg women, who had not had enough traction to score in the first half, were able to turn the game around. The 25-year-old shone as a midfielder, a sophisticated technician and a photographer.

In the 57th minute, Lineth Beerensteyn was denied by goalkeeper Cara Bösl and the crossbar, but Lattwein pushed the ball over the line to make it 1-1. Five minutes later, Beerensteyn was denied again by Bösl after a strong Lattwein pass.

But Lattwein didn’t let up. After a fine solo from the left side, she then set Alexandra Popp in the spotlight with a quick pass, and the joker made it 2-1 (71′).

Vallotto and Peddemoors ensure a clear victory

Nine minutes later the game was decided. Smilla Vallotto made everything clear with her second goal of the season. Ella Peddemoors scored in stoppage time to make the final score 4-1

After a clear improvement in performance in the second round, the “Wolves” took their sixth win of the season and remain close to champions Bayern Munich.
