In the top duel with Real Madrid it was close for a long time. Then a world champion brought Anfield Road to a boil.

With Florian Wirtz in the starting line-up, English champions Liverpool FC have made a much-needed statement. The struggling “Reds” deservedly defeated record winners Real Madrid 1-0 (0-0) in the top game of the Champions League and achieved their third success in the fourth game.

Argentine world champion Alexis Mac Allister (61st) put his team in the lead. Wirtz, who was reunited with his former Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, created the big chance before the break: his cross landed at the completely free-standing Dominik Szoboszlai, but Thibaut Courtois saved his shot with his foot in a world-class manner (27′).

Courtois also defused the dangerous long-range shot from ex-Leipzig player Szoboszlai (43′). In the second half, the Belgian was the center of attention with strong saves against headers from Virgil van Dijk (47′) and Hugo Ekitiké (48′). Both chances came from corners from Wirtz. Courtois couldn’t get his hands up in time for Mac Allister’s header goal.

The harmless Royals suffered their first defeat in the premier class, but still have their sights set on direct qualification for the round of 16. Liverpool caught up with Real, both teams have nine points.

Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur also remained unbeaten. Thanks to some former Bundesliga players, the “Spurs” won 4-0 (1-0) against FC Copenhagen with the German Youssoufa Moukoko. Former Leipzig player Xavi Simons prepared Brennan Johnson’s lead with a dream pass (19′). Wilson Odobert (51′) also scored after an assist from Randal Kolo Muani (formerly Eintracht Frankfurt), ex-Wolfsburg player Micky van de Ven (64′) and Bayern loanee João Palhinha (67′). Goalscorer Johnson was sent off for serious foul play (57th, according to video evidence).

The Italian record champions Juventus Turin, on the other hand, are still not getting going. After a 1-1 (1-1) draw against Sporting Lisbon, the Turin team are still waiting for their first success in the league phase. Because of three draws and one defeat, progress is in danger early on. At least Dušan Vlahović (34th) made up for the deficit caused by Maximiliano Araujo (12th).
