Bayern captain Manuel Neuer gives rare insights into his future planning in Paris. At the same time, he is caught up in bad memories.

Captain Manuel Neuer spoke about his sporting future before FC Bayern’s away game against Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain. “I’m totally relaxed about it. What will be important is what we do with the team,” said Neuer at the final press conference in the Parc des Princes in Paris. Although he didn’t allow himself to be influenced by his personal plans, he at least set out a time frame for his possible future decision. “I take my time, even over the winter, to ensure that I stay healthy and perform well. Then you can always talk,” Neuer continued.

The 39-year-old also gave a few insights into what he will base his decision on a possible extension of his contract, which is only valid until the end of this season. “There are many components involved. It is certainly a question of fitness, health, motivation – and also what happens to the club next season,” explained Neuer. “I can’t answer this question myself at the moment.”

Head coach Vincent Kompany then also spoke about Neuer’s future. “It’s exactly about the factors that Manu mentioned,” said the Belgian. “There doesn’t have to be any time pressure. It’s a club decision, not just Manu, not just me.” And further: “The important thing is that he has fun and keeps it up. At some point the moment will come when it will be discussed.”

Jan-Christian Dreesen also sees no reason to rush into the question of Neuer’s future in goal at FC Bayern. “There’s a lot to be said for Manuel Neuer in general, but we want to concentrate on sport at the moment. We’ve already said that in other cases with other players,” said Bayern’s CEO. “Manuel is under no pressure at all and we will talk in due course.”

Neuer was full of anticipation and self-confidence before the Champions League clash against PSG. At the same time, he was also caught up in bad memories in the French capital: the attacks in Paris during an international match for the German national team at the Stade de France almost exactly ten years ago.

“We also drove past the Stade de France. It was also an issue for us. Of course, memories come back,” said Neuer. “You will never forget that. It was a situation that you would not wish on any society, the city or the people.” And further: “It was very frightening. These memories don’t just disappear. Those were scary times.”
