Bouna Sarr’s four-year spell at Bayern ended in the summer of 2024 after just 33 appearances after the right-back suffered a torn cruciate ligament. The last time the 33-year-old was on the pitch in a competitive game was on November 11, 2023 in the 4-2 win against 1. FC Heidenheim. After more than 16 months without a contract, Sarr will most likely train with FC Metz on Tuesday, reports the French sports daily “L’Équipe”.
If the Lyon-born right-footer proves his fitness, a return to his former place of work is possible. Sarr spent part of his youth in Metz and rose to become a Ligue 1 professional there. The 13-time Senegalese international landed at FC Bayern via Olympique Marseille on deadline day at the beginning of October 2020 – the German record champions paid a transfer fee of 8 million euros. Sarr was intended as an alternative for the position at the back right after a commitment from Ajax professional Sergiño Dest (25), who moved to FC Barcelona, could not be realized.

Sarr, who has been plagued by injuries, is said to have tried to stay fit since leaving Bayern. After eleven match days, FC Metz is in 17th place as a newly promoted team. On Sunday the club won 2-0 against rivals FC Nantes, but those responsible are still looking for reinforcements. FC Metz is familiar with returnees, and Sarr would not be the first in the recent past: at the end of August, striker Habib Diallo (30) was brought from Saudi Arabia on a free transfer after being away for 1,791 days (for returnee statistics).
