Sunday to forget for Joya, between muscle strain and missed penalty. He is in the last year of a contract worth 8 million per season, and his future in the Giallorossi, at the age of 32, is becoming increasingly uncertain
And now everything is more difficult. Not only because Paulo Dybala’s injury worries (and not a little) Gian Piero Gasperini, but also because that muscle strain in the left thigh puts a big brick on Joya’s hopes of being able to extend her contract with the Giallorossi. The agreement between the Argentine star and Roma will in fact end on June 30th, when the contract signed by Joya expires in 2022. And the chances of being able to renew it are increasingly reduced, also due to a physical-athletic reliability which in Trigoria they consider “fundamental” for any type of future discussion.
the situation
—
Dybala today earns around 8 million euros per season. Many, perhaps even too many for Roma’s current coffers, grappling with the famous “stakes” of the settlement agreement signed with UEFA. A possible new agreement between Roma and Dybala would only be possible at lower figures, a situation that the Argentine would also be willing to take into consideration. Except that Roma also wants to have the certainty of having a “reliable” player from a physical point of view. Something that seemed to be maturing in recent times, with Gasperini himself speaking just before the match against Milan “of Paulo’s very good physical condition”. And instead that damned penalty at San Siro came to overturn all plans, effectively leading to Joya’s nineteenth stoppage in the Giallorossi (with a total of 60 games already missed). A situation which since yesterday has brought some more doubts to those who manage Roma’s future strategies. Moreover, sporting director Frederic Massara had also been clear before Roma-Parma: “At the moment no negotiations have been started, neither for the renewal of Dybala nor for that of Pellegrini. Both we and the two players are focused only on the matches.” Obviously, now the situation is even more stable than before.
bitter birthday
—
And then Dybala’s birthday will truly be a bitter one, next November 15th, when the Argentine will turn 32. Because he certainly expected it to be different and instead he will have to put himself there, fighting with yet another muscle stop in his career. The wait is clearly for the instrumental tests that will take place between today and tomorrow, but his tears, those which took place on the San Siro bench, are eloquent in this sense. Also because Dybala knows well that this is a fundamental moment in his career. “In some ways he is at the height of his footballing maturity,” Gasperini said last Saturday. And that’s exactly how it is, also for what he wants and can do in the future. It is clear that without him Roma will lose a lot, if not a lot, in offensive quality, because Dybala remains the strongest player in the Giallorossi squad. But now in Trigoria they want clear answers, also for the future. And the contract renewal from yesterday is a little further away than before.
