About a year ago, Muriel Furrer died in a tragic accident. Now her mother gave a moving interview.
A little more than a year after the tragic death of her daughter, Christine Brand Furrer gave an emotional insight into her inner life surrounding the accident. In the Christian-influenced Swiss TV program “Window on Sunday” she talks about the moment when the doctors told her Muriel Furrer’s diagnosis. The cycling talent suffered a traumatic brain injury after a serious fall at the Road Cycling World Championships in Zurich at the end of September 2024.
“I was sitting in a chair and collapsed in the chair,” said Brand Furrer about the conversation with the doctors. She then simply said: “No, please don’t. That can’t be right.” But there was no way around an emergency operation.
While Muriel’s father Reto remained in the intensive care unit, Christine Brand Furrer went to the hospital chapel. There she begged God for help and strength to get through the current situation. She then returned to the ward and walked through the hospital café.
“People drank coffee, laughed and talked,” said Brand Furrer, who found it “surreal.” “The earth just keeps turning and I’m currently in a horror story that I can’t get out of.”
The next blow for Brand Furrer came in the evening: the doctors informed the family that Muriel probably wouldn’t survive the night. The mother then stayed with her child and a folding bed was set up at her side. She sang songs from her childhood to her daughter.
“Meanwhile, Müri’s entire life flashed past me like a film, from birth to the whole 18 years. I felt very grateful. And I always felt very strongly: We are not alone.” Jesus was with them.
Muriel Furrer died the following day. The results of the authorities’ investigation into her fall are still unknown. But the fact is: there were no eyewitnesses to the accident. The athlete was only found off the track after the race.
