The number of dead and injured is expected to rise further. The earthquake near the Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif on Sunday night (local time) had a magnitude of 6.3, the American geological institute USGS reported.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 28 kilometers near the town of Choelm, not far from Mazar-i-Sharif. The shocks were also felt in the more southerly capital Kabul.
Two months ago, more than 2,200 people were killed in a major earthquake in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is particularly vulnerable to earthquakes because the country lies at the intersection of two major active fault lines.
