Bielefeld's Joel Grodowski in a duel with Darmstadt's Sergio Lopez

As of: November 1, 2025 11:22 p.m

Despite taking the lead twice, Darmstadt 98 missed out on a win against Bielefeld and a place in the top group of the 2nd league. Arminia earned the point through an energetic performance.

In the 2:2 (2:1) on Saturday evening (November 1st, 2025), Fraser Hornby scored for the Lilies in the 4th minute, Noah Sarensen Bazee equalized (28th). Five minutes after the 1-1, Isac Lidberg added Darmstadt’s second goal, but Maximilian Großer (73′) secured the draw for Arminia in the second half.

Kohfeldt is annoyed about losing points

Darmstadt coach Florian Kohfeldt was annoyed in the Sportschau interview: “There have rarely been games that should have gone more clearly our way. We had seven or eight top-class chances to score and clearly deserved the win. However, Bielefeld also fought self-sacrificingly.”

Darmstadt could actually have been leading higher at halftime. The score on goal at the break was 13:4, the hosts had won 55 percent of the duels and had almost 60 percent possession of the ball. The Lilies made the first statement early on, Matej Maglica headed a corner towards the right corner of the goal, and Hornby finally got a foot on the ball and poked it over the line.

163 kilometers of mileage in your bones

It cannot be said with certainty whether the false start was due to the after-effects of the stressful cup game on Wednesday evening. But it took almost half an hour for Bielefeld to get the 163 (!) kilometer mileage from 1:2 after extra time at Union Berlin out of their heads and muscles. Darmstadt, who were much more relaxed in their 4-0 win over Schalke in the cup, almost made it 2-0 in the 19th minute. But another dangerous header from Maglica landed on the right crossbar.

Even after this acoustic warning, Bielefeld still didn’t get into the game at all, but then scored the equalizer out of absolutely nowhere. Darmstadt slept on a throw-in from the right side, Joel Grodowski’s cross sent Sarensen Bazee turning from the penalty spot into the net.

Lidberg scores, Hempel refuses a hand penalty

But the people of Darmstadt immediately took control again. Luca Marseiler had two chances to take the lead again (29th and 31st minute) before Lidberg made the decisive move: the Swede moved into the center from the left, three Arminians only provided protection, but the shot into the right corner was also worth seeing.

The lead was well deserved, but was still in danger again. Bielefeld’s Monju Momuluh shot from a good 20 meters in the 42nd minute, Fabian Holland threw himself into the shot in the penalty area like a goalkeeper and clearly got the ball in his hand. Since he accepted this quite happily during his flight and also increased his body surface area, a penalty would have been the correct consequence. But after studying the video for a long time, referee Richard Hempel announced via the stadium microphone that he did not consider the situation to be a criminal offense – strange.

Lots of chopping and chopping

The Arminen then managed to generate significantly longer ball passages in the second half, but initially nothing came of it. The game petered out for 25 minutes, there were no more combined goal scenes, it was just a lot of chopping and chopping in the midfield. But the guests’ persistence in always making a new attempt despite so much piecemeal paid off. Großer was very lucky with his shot from half-right that Maglica deflected the ball, but that probably didn’t matter to him – Marcel Schuhen in the Lilien goal had no chance.

Darmstadt then pushed for the 3-2 score again, but Bielefeld had the best chance in the 82nd minute. After the best combination of the second half, Joel Grodowski aimed flatly at the left corner. Schuhen would have been beaten again – but the ball went just wide of the post. In return, Arminia keeper Jonas Kersken was called upon again, but he shortened the angle well against Kilian Corredor and thus kept the point for Westphalia.
