As coach of teams like Stuttgart, Hertha and Hamburg, Bruno Labbadia gained a lot of Bundesliga experience. He could now celebrate his comeback at another club.

Bruno Labbadia has currently been without a coaching job for two and a half years. In March 2023, VfB Stuttgart parted ways with the Darmstadt native. As the “Wolfsburger Allgemeine” reports, among others, Labbadia could soon celebrate his comeback in the Bundesliga. According to the report, the 59-year-old is considered an internal favorite at VfL Wolfsburg should the club part ways with coach Paul Simonis, who is counted out due to the sporting misery.

Another candidate is Marco Rose, but he could probably be too expensive for Wolfsburg. It wouldn’t be Labbadia’s first involvement in the Autostadt. He worked for the “Wolves” from February 2018 to summer 2019, saved them in the relegation game against Kiel and reached international business the following year.

There is currently no similarly dramatic situation with concrete fears of relegation in Wolfsburg, but the tension is still high. Because with only eight points from eight Bundesliga games and a second-round exit in the DFB Cup, the Lower Saxony team are running behind their own expectations. Coach Paul Simonis is therefore counted.

In the game against TSG Hoffenheim on Sunday (from 5:30 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online) he will definitely be in the coaching bench. Sports director Peter Christiansen emphasized after the defeat against the second division team Bochum in the DFB Cup on Tuesday: “Yes, he is our coach. We want to work our way through this period together with Paul.”

The only question is how long this promise will last. Christiansen no longer has unconditional support on the supervisory board either. And this supervisory board is the decisive body at VfL. Because there are mostly representatives of the VW Group, the 100 percent shareholder of VfL Wolfsburg Fußball GmbH.
