The next Bundesliga soccer team was eliminated in the second round of the DFB Cup. Augsburg, who had recently been weak, lost 0-1 (0-1) in their home stadium against VfL Bochum. Gerrit Holtmann scored the goal of the evening with the help of the FCA defense.

It was the seventh defeat in the last ten competitive games for FC Augsburg. VfL Bochum, on the other hand, once again impressed with a fighting performance and won their second victory under new coach Uwe Rösler with Gerrit Holtmann’s winning goal (39th). Thanks to the narrow success, VfL moved into the round of 16 of the DFB Cup for the first time since the 22/23 season.

The second division team started the game with much more commitment and had their first chance in the 10th minute. Kjell Wätjen fought for the ball on the right against a half-hearted defending Fabian Rieder. The ball fell to Philipp Strompf’s feet via a few detours, but the defender missed from close range. Sandro Wagner’s team seemed to use the opponent’s chance as a wake-up call, as the Bundesliga team then dominated the game.

Hit the crossbar twice – Augsburg was twice unlucky

Ismael Gharbi approached the Bochum goal for the first time with a long-range shot after VfL goalkeeper Timo Horn was rushed early and played directly at the Tunisian’s feet. After that, FCA’s chances increased. Marius Wolf was allowed to advance into the penalty area without resistance in the 25th minute and hit the crossbar with his shot. The rebounded ball fell at Gharbi’s feet, who also only hit the crossbar with his attempt.

Offensive player Anton Kade also couldn’t take advantage of his chance (34th) and put the ball just past the left post from almost 16 meters. It only seemed like a matter of time before the home side would capitalize on their clear superiority. Six minutes later, Phillip Tietz tested Horn in the VfL box before the guests countered quickly. The ball landed over two stations to Gerrit Holtmann, who was able to finish in the penalty area.

Holtmann takes advantage of Augsburg’s usury of opportunities

Chrislain Matsima deflected the shot so that FCA goalkeeper Nediljko Labrovic no longer has a chance. The next setback after the 6-0 league defeat against RB Leipzig on matchday 8. After half-time, the Bundesliga team started with a lot of pace, but didn’t put the guests in pressure situations too often. Uwe Rösler’s team acted unimpressed, didn’t allow themselves to be lured out of their concept and tried again and again to come to conclusions.

In the 48th minute, defender Strompf appeared dangerously in front of the opponent’s goal, as he had done in the first half. Matsima was able to deflect the shot into the corner from a tight angle. That should have been the last highlight for a long time for the fans in the WWK Arena.

Augsburg lacks ideas – Bochum maintains a narrow lead

Then the chances came every minute. The hosts only had their best chance to equalize in the 81st minute when Horn had to save the ball from Alexis Claude-Maurice on the line. In return, substitute Michael Obafemi had the proverbial foot in the game. The Irishman missed after a counterattack from a central position.

And the next Bochum joker also forgave the decision carelessly. Moritz Kwarteng ran alone towards Labrovic, who made an outstanding save for the second time in a row. Afterwards, coach Sandro Wagner’s team failed to create another clear scoring opportunity and thus further increased their own form crisis.
