The accident happened on the Brugse Steenweg, near the Uniebrug over the IJzer. A truck loaded with gravel overturned on the bridge slope. A passing van ended up under the colossus. All help came too late for the driver of the van, a 36-year-old man.
The public prosecutor’s office sends an expert to the scene to determine exactly what went wrong.
The Brugse Steenweg is closed to all traffic in both directions at the bridge.
