Silvano Bini, historic manager of Empoli Calcio, has died at the age of 96. For about half a century, from 1947 to 1996, Bini held roles in the Italian club until becoming president albeit in one of the club’s most difficult periods, between 1988 and 1989, when the Tuscan team was relegated first to Serie B and then, after losing the play-off against Brescia on penalties in Cesena, to C1. Having joined at eighteen as secretary, he was also general manager and sporting director. During his experience in the Empoli club he discovered many high-level players, such as Antonio Di Natale and Vincenzo Montella, who left Empoli to blossom among the big teams of Serie A.

The mayor of Empoli, Alessio Mantellassi, remembers him: “Silvano Bini was an Empoli native who lived down here leaving a mark. The mark in sport, the mark in a club born and grown so much to the point of competing with the big names, the mark for the many talents discovered. Today Empoli loses one of its wise men, a special grandfather who loved him so much”.

Bini also worked in other clubs, such as Livorno where in 2003 he became sporting director, gaining promotion to Serie A. In 2008, however, there was his move to Pistoiese.
