A referendum that couldn’t be more exciting than an Olympic final: Can the city apply for the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044? “Munich clearly voted yes,” announced Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter at 7:18 p.m. Around 63 percent of Munich residents voted for future summer games.
Mayor Reiter: “Politics for the majority”
Mayor Reiter was very grateful for the “extremely high voter turnout”. It was “a good feeling to be able to say, ‘We’re doing politics for the majority here,'” said Reiter. Over 400,000 Munich residents voted, helping the referendum achieve record turnout. According to Reiter, the mayor and Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) neither expected such a clear result. There was a celebration in the House of Sports after the first results were announced.
The opponents of Munich’s Olympic bid had gathered in the Greek House in the Westend. The disappointment about the clear result was palpable there.
Record voter turnout at Citizens’ decision in Munich
The referendum on the Olympic bid has already achieved record voter turnout. At 3:30 p.m. this was already at 37.8 percent of those eligible to vote. The quorum of ten percent and thus the number of minimum votes was thus achieved. Until now, the record was held by the decision from 2001, when it came to the question of building a new stadium in Fröttmaning.
