He is one of the club legends for the New York Jets. Now Nick Mangold has died. Just a few days ago he posted a call.
Nick Mangold, former center for the New York Jets, is dead. The long-time NFL professional died at the age of 41 as a result of kidney disease. His former club announced this on Sunday.
Mangold played for the Jets from 2006 to 2017 and was named to the Pro Bowl seven times. He was considered a fixture on the team’s offensive line for many years. As the Jets announced, Mangold died on Saturday (local time).
Jets general manager Woody Johnson recognized Mangold as more than just a strong player: “Nick was more than a legendary center,” said Johnson. He was the heart of the offensive line for a decade and shaped an era at the Jets with his leadership and toughness. Even off the field, Mangold impressed with his wit, warmth and loyalty.
Mangold recently spoke about his illness on social media. In a letter he described that in 2006 he was diagnosed with a genetic defect that led to chronic kidney disease. “I am undergoing dialysis while we search for a donor kidney,” Mangold wrote. “I always knew this day would come, but I thought I had more time.”
The 29th pick of the 2006 NFL Draft spent his entire professional career with the Jets. He was in the starting line-up in every game until the beginning of the 2011/12 season.
