Ermedin Demirovic gave VfB Stuttgart the lead at SC Freiburg.

Ermedin Demirovic wins the vote for Goal of the Month for September 2025 by a clear margin. His goal to make it 1-0 against Freiburg received almost 43 percent of all votes. More than 120,000 users and viewers of the sports show voted for his well-aimed heel hit. Flamur Berisha (21 percent) from the Stuttgarter Kickers came in second, while Melanie Brunnthaler (18 percent) from Hamburger SV came third.

Demirovic’s goal is the third backheel goal this year to be awarded the sports show’s gold medal and the 46th overall in the 54-year Goal of the Month history. And like so many previous hits, this one is also very special. When looking at the Goal of the Month for September 2025, you wonder whether Demirovic might also have eyes in the back of his head, so precisely he hits the bottom left of the net while standing with his back to the goal. But first things first…

The cross comes from the left wing. The ball drops down to the penalty spot. The striker takes it perfectly, but has his back to the goal and doesn’t really know how to get the ball into the net from this situation. It’s too narrow to turn. Two Freiburg defenders are practically on his feet. He still tries to turn to the right, stops, tries again, stops again. Then he senses the small gap that has arisen behind him on the left and plays the ball with his heel.

It looks a bit like billiards, how the ball rolls from the 27-year-old’s foot past all of Freiburg’s legs across the 16-yard box and then lands precisely in the bottom left corner of the goal. An absolutely extraordinary hit. Many goals of the month are chosen because they were particularly spectacular and dynamic. Demirovic’s billiard heel hit, on the other hand, is a goal with his head.

Most expensive new signing at VfB

Ermedin Demirovic joined VfB in 2024 for 23 million after the departure of Serhou Guirassy and should help close the 28-goal hole that he left behind. The Bosnian international was the most expensive signing in VfB’s history to date and expectations for him were correspondingly high.

With 15 goals and two assists, Demirovic really didn’t score badly in his first season. Nevertheless, there was criticism from the fans. “At times it was portrayed as if I was the biggest transfer flop that VfB had ever made,” said the disappointed Bosnian in an interview with the sports magazine “Kicker”.

There can be no question of that at all, because Demirovic also scores reliably in the 25/26 season and – like the goal against Freiburg – is also worth seeing. If he continues like this, the critics among the Stuttgart fans will probably be satisfied at some point and – who knows – they might choose one or two of the top striker’s goals as goal of the month.

The 18th goal of the month for Stuttgart

This is the 18th goal of the month for VfB. In the all-time table, Stuttgart climbed one place to eighth place. The first goal of the month was scored in January 1974 by the legendary Hans “Buffy” Ettmayer with a powerful shot from distance.
