The fall happened at the back of the Pantheon, one of Rome’s most popular tourist attractions. Because the Roman temple is considerably lower than the current street level, there is a kind of wall around the structure. The lower part, between the street and the building itself, is not accessible to the public. The emergency services therefore had to force a side entrance to the Pantheon to reach the fallen tourist. He had already died by then.

The Pantheon, known for its large dome, attracts at least 7 million visitors every year. The temple dates from the second century AD, but is very well preserved because it was later renamed a Catholic church.
