Werder Bremen and Union Berlin played a tough game for a long time. But a single highlight brought the decision.

Werder Bremen achieved an important victory in the midfield duel of the Bundesliga. On Friday evening, the Weser club beat Union Berlin 1-0.

The two teams fought a tough duel for a long time with few highlights. But in the 72nd minute, Bremen’s Marco Grüll almost forgot everything: from the right edge of the penalty area, he took courage and circled the ball into the left corner of the goal. The stroke of genius was enough to win. Thanks to the three points, Bremen now jumps to seventh place with eleven points and thus past Union. Union is in tenth place with ten points.

The evening began with a moment of sadness. The fans in the Weserstadion applauded as they remembered the Werder legend Max Lorenz – the 1966 World Cup runner-up and 1970 World Cup third-place finisher had died at the age of 86.

From a sporting perspective, Werder coach Horst Steffen had a first: for the first time, he called king transfer Victor Boniface into the starting line-up despite his stuttering start in Bremen. The Nigerian looked eager to take advantage of his chance – he entered the game with a good long-range shot to the right of the goal (15th).

Not much else happened at first. In the duel, which had midfield written all over it in the table, there was also a lot of mediocrity in a balanced first half. Both teams couldn’t get past approaches in the cozy eight degrees on the Osterdeich – Danilho Doekhi missed Berlin’s best chance with his head shortly before the half-time whistle (45th + 2).

Even after the break, the teams initially offered Friday evening entertainment of a very manageable quality. Union, for whom former Bremen crowd favorite Oliver Burke stormed, was hardly interested in possession, while Werder were also not dangerous. When it smelled like a 0-0 draw in the Weserstadion, Grüll took heart and curled the ball beautifully into the goal with his left.
