It was nothing less than a real shock moment so shortly before the start of the season: German ski star Kira Weidle-Winkelmann broke her nose in a training fall and even had to undergo surgery.

The 29-year-old ski racer shared this news on social media on Wednesday and posted pictures and a video on Instagram.

But she doesn’t want to worry her fans: “The nose is whole again in no time,” wrote the Starnberg resident, once again proving her humor and calmness.

The crash came just a few days before the traditional season opener in Sölden, but Weidle-Winkelmann wasn’t scheduled to start there anyway. The specialist in fast disciplines will not get back into racing until mid-December, when there are two downhill runs and a Super-G in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Until then there is enough time for a full recovery.

DSV coach Puelacher: “Not a big problem”

The German Ski Association has also given the all-clear after Weidle-Winkelmann’s fall.

Head coach Andreas Puelacher said in a DSV statement: “She still has some time.” The facial injury is “not a big problem,” but it is now a matter of allowing the healing to subside in peace.

It was planned to skip the start in Sölden anyway, as the giant slalom is traditionally on the program there – not a parade discipline for the speed specialist.

For Weidle-Winkelmann, who is considered one of the best downhill skiers in the world in the World Cup and has already won World Championship silver in Cortina d’Ampezzo, the broken nose is likely to be an annoying incident – but not a major setback in terms of her plans for the season. When the fast races start in December, Kira Weidle-Winkelmann wants to be at the front again.
