Hoogland finished third in his heat, while reigning Olympic champion Lavreysen achieved the same result not much later. A place among the best four was necessary to continue on the Santiago slopes.

Lavreysen, three-time world champion on the keirin, would have needed the repechages to reach the quarter-finals. Unlike Hoogland, the 28-year-old Brabander had not managed to finish among the first two in his heat, but he still put this right. Tijmen van Loon, the third Dutch participant, failed in the retakes.

Six riders start on the keirin, first riding three laps behind a motorized pacer and then sprinting for the win in three laps. The dropouts in the quarter-finals included Matthew Richardson, the Briton who previously took silver on behalf of Australia in Paris behind Lavreysen.

The semi-finals are at 11:14 PM Dutch time.

Van de Wouw fast in qualifying sprint at World Championships

Hetty van de Wouw has qualified directly for the second round of the sprint tournament at the Track Cycling World Championships in Chile. The 27-year-old from Brabant was good for the second time in the qualifications over 200 meters: 10.339. The fastest four women can skip the first round.

Germany’s Lea Sophie Friedrich was the fastest: 10.331. Steffie van der Peet recorded the fifteenth fastest time (10.644) and will start in the first round.

Last year at the World Championships in Ballerup, Denmark, Van de Wouw took silver in the sprint behind the British Emma Finucane.

Van de Wouw and Van der Peet won the world title in the team sprint together with Kim Kalee on Wednesday.
