The trend of many goals in the premier class is confirmed in the second year since the reform. This has now even led to a new high.

The Champions League has never been so rich in goals: on the third matchday of the current season, 71 goals were scored in just 18 games – more than ever before in the group or league phase of the competition. Previously, according to UEFA, the first matchday of the current season and the fifth matchday of the previous season were the highest-scoring with 67 goals in 18 games.

The spectacle was led by defending champions Paris Saint-Germain, who defeated Bayer Leverkusen 7-2 and thus delivered the highest-scoring game of the match day. Other clubs also presented a strong offensive performance: Barça under coach Hansi Flick won 6-1 against Olympiakos Piraeus, PSV Eindhoven prevailed 6-2 against SSC Napoli.

UEFA assigns the statistics to the games in the group phase from 1992/93 to 2023/24 and the new league phase from 2024/25 – each excluding the second group phase between 1999/2000 and 2002/03.

A new record was set last season: According to UEFA, 618 goals in 189 games not only represented the highest total number of goals, but also a new average record with an average of 3.27 goals per game. It remains to be seen whether this mark will fall again this season – the third matchday certainly shows a clear trend.
