Klaiber hopes to come into action for Ajax this season

00.27 am: Sean Klaiber hopes to make his comeback for Ajax this season. The 27-year-old defender, who suffered a serious knee injury last summer, thinks he will be available earlier than in the new season, he tells. Ajax TV

Klaiber tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in July during a training camp in Austria. He had to be operated on and then had a long rehab. The right back is now training again at De Toekomst where he can do more and more. “Engaging duels in group training, that went well,” he says. “If my knee doesn’t get fat after that, I can continue. It’s hard at the beginning, but after that it’s easy.”

Klaiber indicates that it is wise to focus on the next season, also for the full recovery of his knee. Still, he thinks he can act sooner. “As things are going now, I think I can pick up a few more games this season. That would be a nice feeling.” Ajax took over the back from FC Utrecht in the summer of 2020. Last season he played in fifteen league games for the team of coach Erik ten Hag, most of which as a substitute.

No Peter Sagan in Tour of Flanders after disappointing results

4.36 pm: Don’t look for Peter Sagan (32) during the Tour of Flanders next Sunday. The Slovakian rider of Team TotalEnergies will not start after the disappointing results of the past few weeks.

At the beginning of March, Sagan was one of the many riders who had to leave the Tirreno-Adriatico sick. Bad luck for Sagan, who also became infected with the corona virus for the second time at the beginning of this year and as a result was already falling behind in training.

The Slovak returned to the pack with a promising fifth place in Milan-Turin, but only finished 92nd a few days later in Milan-Sanremo. In the E3 Saxo Bank Classic last Friday he only finished 68th at more than eleven minutes from Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte, on Sunday the Slovak did not even make it to the finish of Gent-Wevelgem. He was also not at the appointment in the Flemish opening weekend (98th in the Omloop, 117th in Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne). France’s TotalEnergies was not yet enjoying its expensive bird.

Sagan won the Tour of Flanders in 2016 for the first and only time. Last year he finished fifteenth.

American golfer Scheffler new captain of world rankings

3.25 pm: American golfer Scottie Scheffler is the new leader of the world rankings. He knocked Spaniard Jon Rahm from first place by winning the World Match Play Championship in Austin (Texas) on Sunday. The 25-year-old Scheffler climbed up from fifth place.

In the World Cup match play, Scheffler was too strong for former number 1 in the world Dustin Johnson in the semifinals and he defeated Kevin Kisner in the final. It was already his third tournament win in a short time on the American professional tour; he won the Phoenix Open in February and the Arnold Palmer Invitational in early March.

“I am very competitive and want nothing more than to play on the Tour. That was already a goal for me,” said Scheffler after reaching the milestone. “I get a lot of fun competing with the others and being able to win tournaments is great. My position in the world rankings has honestly never bothered me that much.”

Football players in April against South Africa instead of Belarus

2:39 p.m.: The football players of Orange will play a friendly match against South Africa on Tuesday 12 April in The Hague. The game with the African players replaces the World Cup qualifier against Belarus.

Last month, the KNVB announced that the national football teams will no longer play against Russia and Belarus for the time being. “The seriousness and scale of Russia’s continued aggression and Belarus’ cooperation with it, mean that the KNVB has taken this decision,” the football association reported.

The KNVB has now removed the World Cup qualifier with Belarus from the football players’ program and replaced it with an exhibition game with South Africa. The association remains “in talks with UEFA about the match against Belarus.” Four days before the exhibition game, the Orange squad will play in Groningen in the context of World Cup qualification in Groningen against Cyprus.

Orange is in the lead in the World Cup qualifying pool. The team of national coach Mark Parsons has 11 points after five matches. Number 2 Iceland has 9 points, but has played one game less.

Because about 350,000 tickets have already been sold, the record of the European Championship of 2017 in the Netherlands has already been improved. Then about 240,000 tickets were sold.

The opening match of the European Championship is on July 6 at Old Trafford in Manchester, between England and Austria.

Handball players with Van Leeuwen, Kooij and Bourget in the play-off for the World Cup

2:02 p.m.: National coach Erlingur Richardsson has called up handball players Thijs van Leeuwen, Lars Kooij and Florent Bourget for the play-off to participate in the World Cup. In mid-April, Portugal is the opponent of Orange. The Dutch men can qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1961.

Goalkeeper Van Leeuwen is the replacement for Dennis Schellekens, who is missing from the selection. Niko Blaauw and Tommie Falke, among others, have not been called up either.

Richardsson has included a total of eighteen players in his final roster. Two players have yet to be eliminated as there are 16 players allowed on the scoresheet.

On April 14, the Orange squad first awaits an away game, after which Richardsson’s team will play a home game on April 17 in Eindhoven.

The World Cup is in January of next year in Sweden and Poland.

Austrian national coach Foda announces departure after missing World Cup

1.20 p.m.: Franco Foda has announced his departure as head coach of Austria’s national football team. The 55-year-old German did this four days after his team lost 2-1 to Wales, which means that he is no longer in the race for a World Cup ticket. The friendly match against Scotland will be his last on the bench with the Austrians on Tuesday.

“I’ve been thinking about it for the past few days and then took the plunge. There was still talk about extending my contract, but that didn’t matter. I take my responsibility,” said Foda, who joined the Austrian Football Association in the autumn of 2017. “It has been a great honor for me to work with this team. My successor will receive a selection with possibilities under his care.”

Austria reached the European Championship under his leadership, where it managed to win a duel for the first time last summer. However, participating in the World Cup has not been successful since 1998. Foda won 27 of the 47 international matches where he was on the bench. None of those victories came against a team higher in the world rankings.

Hornets ruin Irving’s return to New York

07:23 o’clock The Charlotte Hornets basketball players have ruined Kyrie Irving’s return in a home game for the Brooklyn Nets. The Hornets were too strong for the Nets in New York with 119-100, where the unvaccinated Irving (30) was able to come back into action due to relaxed corona measures.

The authorities in New York relaxed the corona measures on Thursday. Mayor Eric Adams announced that rules prohibiting unvaccinated athletes from playing for the teams in New York will be dropped. Unvaccinated players from the visiting teams were allowed to play in New York in the past period. “By broadening the existing exception, we ensure that the rules are the same for everyone, regardless of where they come from,” said the mayor.

The cheered Irving came to 16 points against the Hornets, his teammate Kevin Durant took 27 points. LaMelo Ball was the top scorer of the evening on the side of the Hornets. He was good for 33 points.

For Irving, who has not played in Brooklyn since June 2021, it was only his 22nd game of the season. In the 21 away games played this season, he averaged 27.1 points per game.

The Hornets and Nets are the numbers 7 and 8 of the Eastern Conference. Both teams have a 52 percent win percentage.
