Rouven Schröder shows special commitment when he moves to Gladbach – and even digs into his own wallet.
Something like this doesn’t happen every day. In order to be able to return to the Bundesliga, Rouven Schröder apparently covered part of the costs himself. The 50-year-old took this unusual step in the crucial phase of talks between Borussia Mönchengladbach and his previous club RB Salzburg.
As “Sport Bild” reports, Schröder paid part of his own transfer fee himself – and thus made the agreement possible in the end. Borussia wanted to stay below the one million euro mark, Salzburg demanded more. The difference, an amount that is said to be in the low six-figure range, was ultimately taken over by Schröder himself.
Both sides would have reached an agreement even without this step, but internally those involved viewed Schröder’s commitment as a strong sign of his identification with the club. Managing director Stefan Stegemann said: “When it comes to financial matters – at this point Rouven clearly said: ‘If we want to find an agreement, it shouldn’t fail because of my actions.'” Schröder’s determination was convincing.
Gladbach’s new manager now has to answer one of the most important questions, namely: What’s next for Eugen Polanski? The 39-year-old stepped in as interim coach after Gerardo Seoane was fired, but is still waiting for a competitive win. Polanski, who is actually responsible for the U23s, has until the international break in November to recommend a permanent solution – or Schröder will have to look for alternatives on the coaching market.
Gladbach is currently in last place in the Bundesliga with just three points. 1. FC Heidenheim has one point more in 17th place. St. Pauli in 14th place in the table is also still within reach with seven points.
