Manchester United handed their arch-rivals their fourth defeat in a row. A former “Red Devil” likes this.
There was great joy at Anfield Road – at least among the guests. Manchester United has won the prestigious duel of the record champions against the English football champions FC Liverpool. The team led by former Bayern defender Matthijs de Ligt defeated their arch-rivals 2-1 (1-0). United were able to win against Liverpool for the first time since 2016. Meanwhile, Florian Wirtz and Co. suffered their fourth defeat in a row.
Bastian Schweinsteiger also had reason to be happy. The former professional player, who played in the United jersey between 2015 and 2017, congratulated his former club: “Simply wonderful. What a game!” Schweinsteiger wrote on the online platform X. He also posted a photo of himself in front of the television showing the players applauding after the final whistle.
Bryan Mbeumo (2nd minute) and Harry Maguire (84th) scored the goals in a somewhat fortunate victory for Man United. Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo (78th) scored to equalize for the champions, who dominated the game for a long time.
The hosts did not allow themselves to be deterred by the early setback and dominated the game, while Manchester was primarily waiting for the counterattack. Liverpool pushed for an equalizer, but failed several times because of the aluminum – Gakpo alone hit the post three times – and because of United keeper Senne Lammens, who put in a strong performance.
