Palace contract expires

Last summer, Marc Guéhi was close to moving from Crystal Palace to Liverpool, but ultimately stayed. It is an open secret that this was mainly due to the veto of his current employer. By next summer at the latest, the Premier League club will no longer have a say due to the expiring contract. According to successful coach Oliver Glasner, leaving at the end of the season is more or less a done deal.
“Marc has already told us that he won’t sign a new contract and will therefore leave next year. We wanted him to stay and offered him a new contract. But he said: ‘No, I want to do something else.’ And that’s normal,” explained the 51-year-old at the press conference before the game against AFC Bournemouth on Saturday (4 p.m.).
Back in September, shortly after the failed move, Glasner praised his protégé for his reaction. Guéhi “handled the situation very well”. He and the Palace officials spoke on deadline day, when the central defender already thought he was a Liverpool professional. His strong performance for the English national team showed that he was able to cope with the disappointment well. “He will be our captain as long as he is here because he is a great player and has a great personality.”
Due to interest in the summer and good performances at the start of the season, Guéhi went up from 45 million to 50 million euros in the Premier League’s market value update on Friday. The 25-year-old, who was signed from Chelsea for 23.3 million euros in the summer of 2021, has never had a higher market value in his career. If he maintains this value until the end of the season, he will become one of the five most valuable free transfers in history next year.
FC Bayern interested: Guéhi transfer also depends on Upamecano
Where it will go is still unclear. Despite investing 483 million euros, FC Liverpool still has a need in the center of defense, but FC Bayern has also recently been mentioned as interested. In Munich, Guéhi would be an option, especially if Dayot Upamecano does not extend his expiring contract. “That’s the big issue for us: the Upa extension. That’s what is above all else for us,” said sports director Max Eberl before the Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund on Friday.
