Netflix’s three-part documentary on Victoria Beckham, released on Thursday, October 9, takes viewers deep into her story.
People-magazine, the media’s “obsessive” attitude towards Victoria’s appearance distorted her perception of her own body. Now she talks openly about her eating disorder in a new documentary.
– I was weighed on national television when Brooklyn was six months old, he recalls and continues:
– “Get on the scale”, “Have you lost weight yet?” It might have been laughed at and joked about on TV, but I was really young and it hurt. Victoria recalls.
He says that after that he started doubting and hating himself.
– I hated myself because I let it affect me. I no longer knew what I saw when I looked in the mirror.
According to Victoria, her eating disorder made her really good at lying and she was never honest with her parents about what she was going through. At the same time, she felt that she was managing media criticism of her appearance in an extremely unhealthy way.
– It reflects directly on you when you are constantly told that you are not good enough. I think that feeling has followed me throughout my life, he describes.
Her husband David Beckham ponders what kind of magnifying glass women were under in the early 2000s.
– Back then, it was thought that it was perfectly acceptable to criticize a woman for her weight, what she does or how she dresses. A lot of things happened on television back then that would no longer be allowed, he recalls and continues:
– The Victoria I knew – at home in sweatpants, smiling, laughing and holding a glass of wine – began to disappear precisely because of the constant criticism she received.
Victoria has characterized herself as a “really picky” eater.
– I don’t like oils, butter or sauces. I’m probably most restaurants’ worst nightmare.
He said that he adopted a very healthy way of eating when he joined the Spice Girls group, because the body was often put to the test during the tour.
He has said that he has actually been eating the same food for the last 25 years: grilled fish and steamed vegetables.
He has said that he does not eat red meat or dairy products either.
