Hamburger SV should, according to its CEO Dr. Thomas Wüstefeld back to the Bundesliga as quickly as possible and build on successful times in stages. “We want to strengthen our core business, sport, and get back into the premier league. We have the chance to do that this season. And if we don’t make it, we will do everything we can to start the project again straight away,” said the medical entrepreneur in a “kicker” interview.

After 27 of 34 match days, HSV is fifth in the table under coach Tim Walter, has two points from the past four games and is six points behind the relegation place. There are already nine points less for a game played than the direct promotion ranks. In their almost four-year history in the second division, the North Germans have never had so few points at this point in the season.

Despite the increasingly realistic prospect of a fifth year in the German lower house, the club is probably planning with an unchanged player budget. Although the “Red Pants” are forced to take “careful steps” and take “individual steps” in order to achieve stability, the hope for brighter days should not fade. “We also need visions,” Wüstefeld clarified. After the market value update, HSV has the second most valuable squad in the league behind ranking leader and northern rival Werder Bremen.
