The Bayern Munich basketball players suffered a clear defeat at Fenerbahce Istanbul at the end of the double game day in the Euroleague. The Munich team lost 73:88 in the Turkish capital on Thursday evening and suffered their third defeat in their fifth European appearance.

Thanks to the now significantly better basket ratio, the reigning champion moved ahead of Bayern to 15th place in the table, while Munich is now in third-to-last place (18th). The Turks had previously only managed one win in four games and had a weak start to the European season.

It only seems to start well

The Munich team started the game on the Bosporus with concentration. The Germans quickly led 6-0, the hosts found it extremely difficult in both offense and defense. Istanbul committed nine turnovers in the first quarter.

But the guests played too inconsistently, Fener caught himself and turned the score to 14:13. Bayern countered two missed free throws from Munich with an offensive rebound and a three-pointer from Justinian Jessup, and after another three-point attempt from Niels Giffey, the first quarter ended 20:14 for Bayern Munich.

Messed up second quarter

Istanbul did not allow itself to be disturbed by the considerable deficit. The second quarter clearly went to Fenerbahce, coached by Lithuanian Sarunas Jasikevicius, with a score of 23:12, also because Scottie Wilbekin and Tarik Biberovic showed strong long-range throws under pressure.

Even during the break, head coach Gordon Herbert was unable to completely realign Bayern. In particular, the basket throws were no longer successful – even if the throwing situations looked good and the path to the basket was actually clear. The Munich team also clearly lost the third round with 14:25, the score after the third quarter was 46:62 from the guests’ perspective.

Fenerbahce ends the game easily

The Germans also played a losing battle in the fourth quarter. Istanbul shifted down a gear, Munich won the fourth quarter (24:23), but were unable to change the clear outcome of the game. And the home team rocked victory into a safe harbor.
