With her winning goal in the 95th minute, Lea Schüller gave FC Bayern Women their first victory in the Champions League. The 2:1 (1:1) against Juventus Turin is deserved, but it only came about with video evidence and more than luck.

The FC Bayern women had a lot after the nasty 7-1 defeat at FC Barcelona made on the 1st match day. After a good start and an early lead by Pernille Harder (11th), they equalized too quickly in the FC Bayern Campus against Juventus Turin (17th). After that, coach José Barcala’s team tried hard and was the better team with more scoring chances. However, it took until the 95th minute for Lea Schüller to score the winning goal. Only after video evidence did referee Stéphanie Frappart decide on a goal for Munich.

Schatzer’s dream free kick shocks the Bayern women

The hosts got off to a great start and were dangerous several times in the first few minutes through Klara Bühl – the third chance to score in a very short time ended up in the goal because Harder nodded in at the first post (11th). Juventus had not taken part up to this point, but shortly afterwards Eva Schatzer surprisingly equalized with a directly converted free kick from Schatzer (17th).

After that, the game flattened out a bit and the two teams mostly equalized in midfield before Georgia Stanway added another exclamation point shortly before the final whistle with a shot that hit the crossbar (44′).

Video evidence decides close game

After the break, FCB lacked the necessary pace for long stretches and only in the final phase did the hosts turn things up again. The winning goal by substitute Schüller (90+5) was only scored after a long review by the VAR. It was super tight and it was impossible to see with the naked eye whether Schüller’s lob was actually fully behind the goal line.

With the home win, Bayern take the first three points on the international stage and thus remain in the draw for direct qualification for the quarter-finals.
