Good results in front of a home crowd! The German tennis women still have a good chance of winning the small W15 tournament in Essen. It was already clear on Thursday that a DTB representative would be in the final.
With Tessa Brockmann, Victoria Pohle, Karla Bartel, Eva Bennemann and Josy Daems, five DTB representatives reached the quarter-finals at the W15 event in Essen on Wednesday. Although Victoria Pohle, the first German, has now had to give up, it is already clear that a DTB talent will make it to the final.
The 18-year-old Pohle, number 1046 in the world rankings, had to admit defeat to the Dutch Klara Veldman (number 973 in the world rankings) on Thursday. When the score was 1:6 and 0:4, the German pulled the ripcord and gave up. At this point the clock only showed around 50 minutes of play.
Pohle had previously surprisingly put Fiona Ganz (number 659 in the world rankings) from Switzerland in her place in the round of 16. The DTB hopeful peppered her opponent with a whopping twelve aces before closing the bag with the third match point. The downside, however, was a manageable rate of 46.4 percent successful first serves. This could only increase the talent slightly against Veldman.
Bartel or Bennemann in the semi-finals
With Bartel (not in the world rankings), who sensationally defeated the Dutchwoman Isis-Louise Van den Broek (number 522 in the world rankings) in three sets at the start, Brockmann and Bennemann, other DTB starters will try to follow Veldman on Thursday.
Josy Daems has already mastered this project: Number two on the seeding list gave Danique Havermans from the Netherlands no chance at 6:2 and 6:2 and booked her semi-final ticket. There, number 497 in the world rankings will meet the winner of the German duel between Bennemann and Bartel, which guarantees a final with German participation.
The audience in Essen can definitely look forward to a semi-final with German participation: Bennemann and Bartel will compete in a direct duel. The winner will face Daems or the Dutch Danique Havermans.
