With great caution, a number of elderly people open the door of a senior flat on Maria van Bourgondiëlaan in Eindhoven this Wednesday. A resident was injured there on Tuesday evening during a possible robbery. For many residents the event is the talk of the town.
“You think you are safe here,” says a resident after she carefully opens the door. “We heard nothing at all, no sirens, nothing! When I read it, I was very shocked. Normally the doors here close at eight o’clock. So maybe they have been opened after all. That’s not a nice feeling.”
The woman says she now goes out with more caution: “If I have to leave again in the evening, I will now take a closer look to see who is walking behind me.”
On the third floor you can see the sealed front door of the resident who was found injured by a family member. She was taken to hospital with serious injuries and is conscious, according to police.
“I just don’t open the door to strangers.”
Some neighbors are standing in the aisle talking about what happened on Tuesday evening. Everything seems to have happened in silence. A neighbor across the street also had little effect: “The police suddenly showed up at my door and asked if I had heard anything. It was only when I was standing on my balcony later that I saw the police cars downstairs.” He is not afraid: “Then I don’t have a life anymore, do I? I don’t let myself be scared, but I just don’t open the door to strangers.”
A neighbor on the same floor also says that it passed her by in silence: “I was watching television and I didn’t hear anything. I only heard what had happened this morning. You think you live here safely, but that is not the case. That someone can just come in here: I am really very shocked.”
Another resident reported hearing a few loud bangs prior to the incident, but she could not place what it was. Most residents say they will be even more careful from now on. “I never just open the door and always look first to see who is there. I also have a camera, but from now on I will be extra careful,” says one of them.
The police are still investigating what exactly happened in the apartment.
