Biggest winner at Werder

Karim Coulibaly is the biggest winner in the ranks of SV Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga market value update. The 18-year-old is one of the discoveries of the season so far and is now Germany’s most valuable defender under the age of 19 with a market value of 8 million euros. Sports director Clemens Fritz reacts to the new assessment at Transfermarkt.
“Karim has improved in every game so far and his performance is exceptionally good for an 18-year-old. He has shown in the games so far that he can play at this level and has earned his appearances with his performance,” emphasizes Fritz at TM. About the increased market value (which was previously one million) he says: “We saw in the last transfer window how much money was demanded and spent on potential players. So it doesn’t surprise me that Karim has made a jump in valuation after his performance in the last few weeks.”

Market value administrator Tobias Kröger takes a similar line: “Last summer, transfer fees for talent rose worldwide, so Coulibaly must be valued higher than it would have been two or three years ago. Coulibaly was thrown into the deep end and was able to improve from game to game. Overall, he has made huge steps forward since the beginning of this season.”
Coulibaly moved to SVW from Hamburger SV’s youth team on a free transfer in the summer of 2024 and is currently taking his first steps as a professional. After his short debut in Frankfurt on matchday 1 (1:4), he had to start from the start on matchday 2 against Leverkusen (3:3) due to Werder’s injury concerns and experienced ups and downs. The 1.91 meter tall central defender had to learn the lessons in some situations, but even when he was outnumbered, he scored the celebrated last-minute equalizer. Since then, Coulibaly hasn’t missed a minute under new coach Horst Steffen and has the most playing time in his age group in the Bundesliga. He has also been a U19 national player since last September.
The shooting star has long been traded by clubs abroad. The “Bild” newspaper recently reported that several top clubs from Italy, England and Portugal had inquired about him. One interested party is even said to be prepared to spend 15 million to 20 million euros for the DFB junior. Despite the increased attention, Fritz Coulibaly appears to be “very grounded and focused”: “So far he has not let himself be dissuaded from his path and I am convinced that he will maintain this calm.” His contract in Bremen is dated until 2029 and should not contain an exit clause.
The TM community had valued the Oldenburg native at an average of almost 7 million euros in the market value analysis since the end of August, which is slightly below the new valuation. The last entries were already in the double-digit million range. In total there are three upgrades and three downgrades for Werder in this update. Mainly because of the devaluation of Victor Boniface (24), which fell by half to 20 million euros, there was a loss of 17.5 million euros in the squad value. “These values certainly provide a certain orientation, but of course they do not represent the sole basis for an evaluation for us,” says Fritz about the importance of the transfer market market values for his work. “But since the numbers are further processed by the media, they naturally become relevant because they often form the basis for reporting, especially during the transfer phases.”
So I’m starting to think that we have a real talent of the century in our ranks. Being a central defender at Bundesliga level at 18 is one thing. But I find his learning curve even more extreme. From the Leverkusen game, where every pass landed on the opponent but KC was still rewarded with the goal in the end, to solid games against Gladbach, Freiburg and Bayern (!) to his best performance so far against St. Pauli.
I hardly dare to do market value analysis anymore…
This is how transfer market market values work
The transfer market market values are created taking into account various pricing models as well as a strong involvement of the transfer market community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market market values cannot generally be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.
The goal is not to predict a price, but rather an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are listed here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for detailed market value definition).
