The municipality of Amsterdam has spent a million euros in subsidies to get 900 polluting cars off the road. Owners received a premium of 1,000 or 1,500 euros if they had their old barrel demolished. “I spoke to a scientist about this and he said: this often doesn’t help at all, because these are people who already want to get rid of their car,” says reporter David Hielkema (Het Parool) in the podcast Politics on the Amstel, with Nicolai Brannan (AT5) and Marijn Schrijver (De Telegraaf). “Really a drop in the ocean,” says Schrijver.
