After the Grand Slam success in Roland Garros, however, Gauff fell into a sporting low. In Wuhan, however, she presented herself strongly again; on the way to the final, Gauff only played 16 games – including three in the clear 6:3, 6:0 in the round of the best eight against the German Laura Siegemund.

Against Pegula, number six in the world, Gauff was already two breaks behind in the second round (0:3), but she was the stronger player in the decisive phase.

Pegula surprisingly beat world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals and inflicted the Belarusian’s first defeat in the $3.654 million tournament on her fourth appearance in Wuhan.
