Diane Keaton is dead. The Oscar-winning actress died in California at the age of 79, a family spokesman confirmed. The relatives asked for privacy; further details about the cause of death have not yet been released. This is reported by “People”.
For decades, Keaton was considered one of the most striking and charismatic actresses in Hollywood.
She celebrated her international breakthrough in the 1970s with her role as Kay Adams in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather and later as Annie Hall in Woody Allen’s classic of the same name – a performance that earned her the Oscar for Best Actress in 1978.
From Los Angeles to New York: A career full of courage and change
Diane Hall was born in Los Angeles in 1946 as the oldest of four children. Her father was a civil engineer, her mother a housewife – but Diane sensed early on that her mother would have liked to be on stage herself. This unsaid longing became the motivation for the young Keaton to seek her own path in the spotlight.
After high school she began studying acting, but soon dropped out to move to New York. There she took her mother’s maiden name – Keaton – because there was already another Diane Hall in the acting union. Her first big step: an engagement in the Broadway musical “Hair” in 1968.
But the early years were not easy. In interviews, Keaton spoke openly about the eating disorder that she struggled with during this time. It was only through therapy that she found the path to healing – a process that shaped her throughout her life.
Breakthrough with “The Godfather” and cult status with “Annie Hall”
This was followed in 1969 by a role in Woody Allen’s Broadway play “Play It Again, Sam”, which earned her a Tony nomination – and marked the beginning of one of Hollywood’s most productive artistic friendships. Shortly thereafter, Francis Ford Coppola cast her as Kay Adams in “The Godfather” (1972). Although Keaton had never read the book, she was convincing in the casting – and made the character unforgettable.
The success of “The Godfather” and its sequels brought her worldwide fame, but with “Annie Hall” (1977) she became a style icon. Her androgynous look with suit trousers, vest and hat was copied worldwide. “I just don’t like seeing myself on screen,” she once said. She received the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1978 for the Woody Allen film.
Tireless creativity right into old age
Over five decades, Diane Keaton appeared in over 60 films – from “Reds” to “Father of the Bride” to “What Your Heart Desires”, for which she was nominated again for an Oscar. She later shone in “The First Wives Club”, “Book Club” and “The Family Stone”, as well as in series and music videos, most recently alongside Justin Bieber in “Ghost” in 2021.
Away from the camera, Keaton was known for her eccentric style, humor, and passion for architecture and photography. She published books, worked as a director and shared insights into her life on Instagram with humor and warmth.
Private life of an independent
Diane Keaton remained unmarried throughout her life – a conscious decision. “I was never the woman who wanted to get married,” she said in 2019. Instead, she adopted two children, Dexter (1996) and Duke (2001), whom she raised alone.
