The Bergische HC got their long-awaited first win of the season in the handball Bundesliga against HSG Wetzlar.

After six defeats in six games, the BHC celebrated a xx:xx (16:16) home win on Thursday in the Wuppertal Uni-Halle. After the 26:23 win in the second round of the DHB Cup, it was the second competitive game success in a row for coach Arnor Gunnarsson’s team.

Ahouansou against the BHC

At the beginning nothing looked like a confident home success. Sören Steinhaus with three early goals and goalkeeper Christopher Rudek barely kept the BHC in the game in the early stages until Philipp Ahouansou gave the HSG a 7-5 lead with his third goal (8th). Ahouansou was also difficult to get a handle on for the BHC defense afterwards. However, the guests were unable to extend their lead; instead, Noah Beyer equalized with a seven-meter penalty to make it 11:11 (17th).

It remained a level game until half-time. The score was 16:16. At this point, Ahouansou already had seven goals to his name, and his goalkeeper Karim Hendawy made six saves.

Decision shortly after the break

The BHC got off to a better start in the second half and led with two goals for the first time after goals from Beyer and Aron Seesing (18:16/33.). But that wasn’t enough, the lions subsequently expanded their lead even further. After Johannes Wasielewski made it 22:18 (37′), HSG coach Momir Ilic took a time out to interrupt the home team’s run.

The game was decided at the latest after Tomas Babak made it 24:18 (42′). But the BHC didn’t let up and extended their lead (31:22/54.). The BHC repeatedly sniffed at a double-digit lead, but in the end it remained single-digit with a 35:28 victory.

The best goalscorer in the game was Wetzlar’s Ahouansou with nine goals and four assists, while at BHC Beyer and Eloy Morante Maldonado each scored eight goals.

BHC has to go to Magdeburg

On Sunday (October 12, 2025/3 p.m.) the BHC has to play against SC Magdeburg. HSG Wetzlar will then welcome HSV Hamburg (6 p.m.).
