The Algerians did not miss this opportunity. After beating Somalia 3-0, they are at the World Cup. Bundesliga players also have a part in this. One even has a really big one.
Thanks to a strong performance from Mohamed Amoura, Algeria qualified for the 2026 World Cup. The VfL Wolfsburg attacker scored two goals in the 3-0 win against Somalia and was the decisive man on the pitch.
In Bir El Djir, the 25-year-old, who has been scoring goals for the Wolves in the Bundesliga since 2024, took the lead in the 7th minute and added the third goal shortly after the break (57th). In the meantime, ex-Manchester City professional Riyad Mahrez (19th) increased the score to 2-0.
With the clear success, Algeria secured first place in Group G of the African World Cup qualification. The North Africans can no longer be caught and have qualified for a World Cup finals for the fifth time. Algeria previously represented at World Cups in 1982, 1986, 2010 and 2014.
National coach Vladimir Petkovic’s team included other Bundesliga professionals in the starting line-up: Fares Chaibi (Eintracht Frankfurt), Ibrahim Maza (Bayer Leverkusen) and Ramy Bensebaini (Borussia Dortmund).
Algeria is the fourth African country to secure participation in next year’s finals in the USA, Canada and Mexico. The day before, Egypt had secured their World Cup ticket thanks to captain Mohamed Salah. Also definitely included: Morocco and Tunisia.
Ghana can also follow suit on Sunday. The West African country took the penultimate step on Wednesday: with a 5-0 win against the Central African Republic, Ghana secured first place in Group I. A draw against the Comoros on Sunday will suffice.
