Bird flu has been established on a poultry farm in Gasselternijveenschemond. The 71,000 animals on the site are cleared, reports the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).

It is the first infection in the Netherlands since March this year.

It is a company that keeps so -called broiler parents. Those are chickens that lay eggs from which broilers come.

There are six other poultry farms in a zone of three kilometers around the company. They are investigated by the NVWA. A tracing test is also held to see if there have been contacts with infected products or poultry.

In an area of ten kilometers around the company, a transport ban immediately applies for 31 other commercial poultry farms. There is also a lifting and shielding for poultry and other bird species in that area. With these measures, the NVWA hopes to prevent spread to other parts of the country.

Nationally, there is no obligation to take up and shielding yet, and according to the NVWA there is also no immediate reason for that.
