Eight months after his early end at Borussia Dortmund, the former technical director and squad planner Sven Mislintat emphasized that he had never sought the post of sports director at the Bundesliga club. “My reputation is not as bad as his reputation,” Mislintat told the magazine “Kicker” with a smile with a view to the much -cited criticism of his own person. Many fans of his past clubs are still benevolent, he said.
The 52-year criticism came up with his stations as a technical director of Ajax Amsterdam and the black and yellow. After the separation in February, BVB finally agreed in late summer with Mislintat to dissolve the contract that was originally running until 2028 against a severance payment.
In the interview, Mislintat also commented on a difficult interaction with sports director Sebastian Kehl. “The collaboration did not work as we would all have wanted. You just have to acknowledge that – and draw the right conclusions from it so as not to get back into a similar situation as a club or personally in the future,” said Mislintat. “Sebastian and I are very different without being valuable.” Mislintat contradicted the presentation that he wanted to post Kehl’s. “It was often said that I really wanted to be a sports director. This is wrong. I found the technical management very suitable and deliberately decided.”
Media repeatedly reported on alleged internal quarrels in the sporting leadership. “We all – and I expressly take responsibility – did not get it quickly and well enough to deal with our skills and, if necessary, to reorganize them with overlap. What we could have solved,” said Mislintat and alluded to two measures that could have been worried about the growing together of a group: “On the one hand in the course of the restructuring Sebastian Kehl Longer -term clarity like Lars and on the other hand, it would be good to clarify the new roles and areas of responsibility internally and internally.
He himself never exceeded competencies, Mislintat emphasized: “I always adhered to my employment contract – and the specifications of my superiors Ricken and Aki Watzke. What skills should I have exceeded?” Of course, he had an impact on transfers. “Now honestly: I don’t know a technical director who is not part of the area of responsibility, often even chief scouts are commissioned.” Mislintat admitted that he can sometimes be discussed with heated: “Yes, I am certainly not the one who is in discussions with the diplomat pass. I like dealing with the best for the club. But I take it and never take it in the next room.”
Mislintats successful BVB time during Klopp era
Born in Dortmund, in May 2024, as a technical director and squad planner, returned to BVB. In the successful time under master coach Jürgen Klopp, he had worked as a chief scout between 2009 and 2016. Mislintat laid Ousmane Dembélé (28) to BVB, among others. The French star of Paris Saint-Germain was recently awarded the balloon d’Or. Mislintat also worked for VfB Stuttgart and Arsenal FC. But he underlined: “BVB remains a heart club, I wish him and everyone there only the best.”
