HSV has not experienced such a game for twelve years: thanks to double packer Rayan Philippe (10th/61th minute), the promoted team sent a 4: 0 (2: 0) success Mainz 05 deep into the table cellar. The other goals went to the accounts of Albert Lokonga (6th) and Jean-Luc Dompé (52nd).

With one point and 0: 7 goals from the first three games, the HSV started the season weakly after the climb – but with the 2-1 against 1. FC Heidenheim and 0-0 outnumbered at Union Berlin, the former “Dino” has returned to the Bundesliga. And he obviously had the plan to use this tailwind for a stormy initial phase that Mainz could not withstand.

HSV dances “Sambi” with Mainz

The Volksparkstadion stood head after just a few minutes, when Lokonga settled in 1-0 with a margin (6th). “Sambi” (his second first name he has on the jersey) was perfect after a post hit by Giorgi Gocholeishvili and crowned his first starting point for the HSV very early. Like Fabio Vieira, because of which he moved into the team, Lokonga was moving from FC Arsenal to Hamburg on Deadline Day.

And shortly after his goal, Lokonga was again part of a jubilee – this time he was not the scorer, but another new addition. Philippe prevailed in the opposing penalty area and showed his class at the end, which had already made him one of the best strikers in the 2nd division at Eintracht Braunschweig in the past two years (10th).

Hamburg gives Mainz for the first chances

After ten minutes, the second HSV home victory in a row already indicated-and Mainz goalkeeper Lasse prevented Rieß against Philippe (16th) and Ransford Königsdörffer (16th) that the game was decided at an early stage. After these occasions, Hamburg treated himself to a phase of breathing and focused more on the defensive.

This gave Mainz the opportunity to find better in the game and get the first chances. Nadiem Amiri by free kick (19th) and Kaishu Sano by long-distance shot (30th) checked Daniel Heuer Fernandes, but the HSV goalkeeper was also bright this early Sunday evening. Just like his team was particularly at the beginning of the first half – and then also in the first minutes of the second round.

Dompé hits with a lot of force, Philippe with a lot of feeling

Philippe forced Rieß to another parade (49th), then Dompé fled the ball after a great counterattack just over the long corner (51.) – but only seconds later the HSV led 3-0. Dompé dribbled from his left wing again, but did not go into one-on-one, but nailed the ball at a hell pace from an acute angle to the roof of the Mainz gate (52nd).

And the HSV continued to consistently use the weakness of the Conference League participant in counterattacks-the guests could not stop Philippe at all. The Frenchman was sent deeply again in the 61st minute, ran freely to Rieß and easily overlocked him to 4: 0. The Volkspark was finally a rabid because the HSV fans experienced something that they had not experienced for ages.

When the HSV finally scored four times, Lasogga still snapped

On October 6, 2013, as almost exactly twelve years earlier, Hamburg had last scored so many goals in a Bundesliga game in the 5-0 win at 1. FC Nürnberg. Which also underpins how long it was: At that time the 21-year-old Pierre-Michel Lasogga scored three goals. It is now a playing assistant coach at the U23 of Schalke 04, while HSV is not only back in the Bundesliga thanks to Philippe and Co., but now even in the upper half of the upper house.

Because nothing burned against Mainz, it remained with the clear result that Hamburg catapults into ninth place. And that the team of coach Merlin Polzin gives even more self -confidence for the away game at RB Leipzig (October 18, 2025, 3:30 p.m.) after the international break.

“I am very happy about the performance of the team and the result”said Polzin in the sports show interview. “It takes time – and we will continue to take time as a promoted after a long time in the Bundesliga. We will continue to take time. The attitude of the players is very good and we go in one direction together. As long as the success of the team is in the top priority, we can be successful.”

Is Mainz now about relegation?

In contrast, there can be no question of self -confidence in Mainz. Internationally, the 05s started with a 1-0 at Omonia Nikosia, but things don’t go in the league at all. The team of coach Bo Henriksen has now crashed to 16th place.

“We were not good and that is my responsibility. We lost every header duel and did not win a second ball, it is my job to convey this to my team because this is our DNA”said Henriksen in the Sportschau interview. “We were good last year because power and energy had because we were disgusting. But we know that we will come back, we have to find these power now. We have a bad phase and have to get better.”

However, a Mainz took the next step into a Bundesliga record. Dominik Kohr saw his 100 yellow card, the gap to the “Best brand” by Stefan Effenberg has dropped to 14 warnings. In the previous game against Borussia Dortmund, Kohr had been missing because of a yellow-red lock. After the international break, the defender can also expand his yellow collection against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturdays at 3:30 p.m. – but it would be much more important if Mainz collects points again.
