Today we get turbulent again: lots of rain and the chance of heavy gusts of wind. That strong wind, in combination with people who prepare their garden for winter, ensure that Drents Overijsselse Delta (WDodelta) is extra alert.
“People often get the leaf from the garden during this period. Trees and shrubs are also pruned. That waste is thrown in a lot, but the strong wind can blow it up and end up in the water,” explains Armando Grotenhuis of the water board.
Especially leaves and branches flow into the water and get stuck for the so -called duckwecks. These are fences that stand in the water in front of a pumping station to stop floating material such as plant residues, duckweed and leaves. This way it is prevented that floating material can damage the pumping station. If there is too much pruning and garden waste for the duckwecks, the water does not flow well.
A good flow of water is extra important in the autumn and winter months, because the chance of larger quantities of precipitation and high water in ditches, canals and rivers is greatest during that period. “Being able to drain water on time is then important to prevent nuisance as much as possible.”
