Halle (dpa -AfX) – Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) would like to campaign for investments in East Germany. In the program “MDR Aktuell”, he referred to the plans of the black and red coalition for the construction of new gas power plants with up to 20 gigawatts by 2030. “I want the east to be particularly carefully considered here, and I will also personally keep an eye on it.”
Hope for swivel to Europe and Germany
Merz was optimistic about being able to lure investors to Germany, which he also justified with the situation in the United States. “There is now a swivel to Europe and a swivel to Germany in Europe.” He recalled the failed settlement of Intel in Magdeburg, where there is now an developed industrial area that is suitable for a large investment. There are similar opportunities in other parts of East Germany.
When asked about suppliers, especially in the east that suffer from the crisis of the auto industry, the Chancellor said: “I want the automotive industry in Germany to remain one of the load -bearing pillars of our industry.” Germany must remain an industrial location. “And that also applies and especially to the east.”
Merz is reminiscent of problems in the Ruhr area
There are also breaking industrial structures in other parts of Germany, said Merz. “In the north of the Ruhr area, it sometimes looks worse than in many, many, many areas of the East, much, much, much worse.” He explained: “You will have to search for a long time in the east that you will find the same districts as we now have in the West.” He thinks in the context of the entire Republic, not only of the East, has it particularly in view, because there is still a need to catch up there./Hrz/dp/he
