The new Alzheimer drug Lecanemab is now being used for the first time in patients.
The Lecanemab, Biogen and Eisai manufacturer, has been available in Germany for over a month – the first patients have started therapy in the meantime. There are clinics and practices that have already administered infusions, said the President of the German Brain Foundation, Kathrin Reetz, the German Press Agency. Lecanemab is now also in use at the Berlin University Medical Center Charité, as a spokeswoman said.
Lecanemab is a novel Alzheimer’s medication that has been officially on the market in Germany since September 1, 2025. Unlike previous Alzheimer’s medication, the antibody not only treats symptoms, but also aims at underlying disease processes. With a small selection of patients, he can delay the course of the disease in early stages by a few months. This active ingredient is not about healing or improvement, such a means is still not in sight.
Elaborate examination necessary
Since many criteria have to be observed for treatment, some interested patients still have to be obtained or made up for, said Reetz, who heads the Center for Dementia and Prevention Aachen. “This applies in particular to MRI imaging, which usually has to be carried out again before the start of treatment with Lecanemab.” In addition, Lecanemab was ultimately available faster than expected.
“That is why it starts, but due to the complexity, a careful exam that takes the corresponding time is required.” So far, delivery bottlenecks are not known to her.
Another Alzheimer’s medication recently approved
According to Lecanemab, the EU Commission recently approved the Donanemab drug with a very similar mode of action. It will probably take a few months before Donanemab is available.
According to experts from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), of the estimated around 1.2 million Alzheimer’s sufferers in Germany are ultimately only a very small part of the new therapies.
The Biogen share temporarily lists 2.05 percent higher in Nasdaq trading at $ 158.44, while Eisai titles in Tokyo ultimately pay 2.23 percent to 4.78 yen.
