Flames to the roof and exploding tires: The car fire from Monday night leaves a deep impression in Nuenen. The battery pack of an electric car was on fire, which released toxic white smoke. Several residents therefore had to leave their house and were on the street at night. “We are okay,” says the affected family.

A blackened driveway, a charred plug and twisted steel: the damage of the fire can still be clearly seen in the avenue through the panaks. A window has also jumped. The affected residents would rather not say anything else. According to local residents, they would not have slept at home after the fire.

“Running!”, Direct neighbor Thijs Donkers thought when he saw the Sea Sea. “I was in bed upright.” He quickly put his own car away. “After that I didn’t dare back inside. It was a big adrenaline bomb.”

Poisonous smoke
The fire brigade had difficulty extinguishing the battery pack. That caught fire again and again. A lot of white smoke was released when extinguishing. Smoke from a battery is extremely toxic and extremely sour.

The fire was under control around a quarter past three. The car had to remain under water for some time, so that the heat would disappear and the battery did not go further. That happened with a special submersible bin.

“It is a battlefield, as you can see. That is confronting,” says neighbor Marc Jacobs. “It was pretty intense. You also heard of the tires.” His wife is busy cleaning up glass fragments on Tuesday morning.

Marc went out of the house with his wife and two young children. “I am happy that everyone is unharmed.” The family could soon go back home. “The oldest has come to our bed with us. He thought it was quite exciting.”

“It was very frightening. The flames were so high, they went to the eaves,” says Niek van Beelen. “You constantly heard explosions of tires or windows. I also experienced a car fire myself,” he thinks back.

It is not yet clear how the fire was created in the car. The police announced on Tuesday morning that they are not investigating arson.
