The legendary football stadium San Siro in Milan is about to sell. The city council of the northern Italian metropolis gave the green light to ensure that the two clubs AC and Inter Milan became new owners. The two multiple Italian champions want to build a new building on the site instead of the almost 100 year old arena. The purchase price for the 28 hectare area, which also includes the parking space, is approximately 200 million euros.
The decision in the local council was made in the middle of the night after long discussions. 24 city councilors voted for a sale. 20 were against it. The opposition considers the price too low. There are also protests because many combine memories with the stadium in the west of the city. The German national team and German clubs were often guests there. On the way to the 1990 World Cup title, Germany played five times there.
New construction of San Siro should cost 1.2 billion euros
Italy’s largest football stadium (75,923 spectators) has its name from the district that lies: San Siro. It was officially named after the footballer Giuseppe Meazza (1910-1979), who played for both AC and Inter. Next year – for the 100th birthday – the opening ceremony for the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina (February 6th to 22nd) will take place in the stadium.
At the 2032 European Football European Championship, which organizes Italy together with Turkey, it is also to be played in Milan. However, the matches should then be held in the new stadium, which should become more modern, but also a little smaller: a capacity of 71,500 spectators is planned. The opening is scheduled for 2031.
The two large Milan clubs also want to share the new stadium. The costs are currently estimated at around 1.2 billion euros. It is designed by the architecture firm Foster + Partners and Manica.
