The hard conditions in the road race of the cycling World Cup in Rwanda are demanding their toll. Three of the four German starters have to give up early. The fourth does not make it to the finish line either.
All four German cyclists have not ended the street race of the World Cup in Rwanda. According to information from the German Press Agency, stomach problems were responsible for this. The German road master Georg Zimmermann, Jonas Rutsch and Felix Engelhardt had all got out of half of the race. Marius Mayrhofer held out a little, but also had to stop prematurely. Many cycling professionals did not cope with the demanding conditions of the race.
“I think we are not the only ones who have problems here,” said Rutsch to the portal “Radsport-news.com”. “You can only see that you no longer have to go to the toilet. But in the end I have just heard that you have put it up with the two Dixi toilet that you have put up here that you could also install a revolving door.” The two top stars Tadej Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel also had to put a toilet stop very early in the race.
At the time of the tasks, however, the only remaining German driver, Mayrhofer, was surprisingly in the top group. Later he also fell back and had to stop. German cyclists had already complained about stomach problems during the week. Liane Lippert, for example, had to skip the mixed race on Wednesday and reported on Saturday that she had to hand over during the street race.
267.5 kilometers, 5475 vertical meters and demanding climatic conditions at around 28 degrees in the approximately 1,500 meter high -ended capital Kigali demanded their toll. In view of the conditions, it was expected before the race that only a small part of the professionals will end the race.
The Germans ended the historical World Cup in an African country without a medal. Since the reunification in 1990, with the exception of the Corona edition 2020 only held in the professional sector, there have always been at least one German medal at the world championships.
