Bas Dost (formerly VfL Wolfsburg)

Status: 26.09.2025 12:05 p.m.

The former Bundesliga striker Bas Dost gave up all the comeback attempts two years after his cardiac arrest on the square and ended his career. VfL Wolfsburg’s ex-professional explained that something had been “determined” again during an investigation.

“I don’t want to play with my life. I thought about it for two weeks and then made the decision,” said the 36-year-old in a report in the “Algemeen Dagblad”. On October 29, 2023, Dost, who had played in the Bundesliga for VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, collapsed as a professional of NEC Nijmegen in the duel at AZ Alkmaar.

“I can’t put into words how grateful I am. Without them, I wouldn’t be there anymore.”

Bas dost about his rescuers

For the first time, the former Dutch international hit his rescuers for the history. “I can’t put into words how grateful I am,” he said. “Without them, I wouldn’t be there anymore. Thank you for saving my life.” Dost had been revived on the lawn. Waking up and saying that his heart had stopped was “a shock,” he reported. “You don’t want to stop football like this. You want to decide for yourself. It is unfortunate that I couldn’t do that.”

Again “something was found”

His heart muscle inflammation had dragged over a year and a half in which he couldn’t even play with his son in the garden – too dangerous. “It was terrible,” said Dost. After that, he initially tried to become a football fit again until he got the news that it had been “determined” again. Then he decided: “I don’t want that.”

In the meantime, Dost has founded a company that invests in start-ups and rented holiday apartments in Spain. He can also imagine working in football again.
