Florian Wirtz is still missing something to make a big breakthrough in England. He himself remains positive, but also reacts significantly to the discussion about him.
Seven games, one template, no goal: The start of Florian Wirtz at Liverpool FC has not yet been as hoped. While his team under the new coach Arne Slot is going to start a strong start, the 22-year-old has to put up with the first critical tones. Wirtz himself remains calm – and finds clear words.
In a Sky interview, the international said: “Yes, of course I would have already wished that I would have already scored a goal or had already collected a little scorer points. But no matter what anyone says I stay cool.” And further: “I know what I can and I also know that at some point I really get it on the pitch.”
Wirtz expresses his patience significantly: “I don’t want to hear that all the time,” he said with a view to the debates for his achievements. Instead, he focuses on his development: “I just try to try again every time again.”
The expectations of the ex-Leverkusen were high when he moved to England for 125 million euros in summer. The British press nevertheless evaluates its previous appearances. “Florian Wirtz just doesn’t find his game at the moment,” wrote the “Sun”, for example, while “The Times” emphasized that the “redeeming moment” was missing so far.
Nevertheless, his trainer sees progress: Arne Slot praised Wirtz as “artist who can be tough” and emphasized: “We don’t have to teach him how to play football. He only has to adapt to the intensity level of the Premier League.”
Wirtz himself is confident: “If I have survived (…), it will come at some point and then everything is fine.”
