What about housing in Assen and the region? King Willem-Alexander and Minister Mona Keijzer (BBB) today personally come to look at the developments.

It is not a working day like all others for a number of employees of Brands Bouw BV, who have been working on the construction of the residential tower on the former Acmesa site for ages. The carpenter’s tools can be put aside for a while when King Willem-Alexander, together with the Minister of Housing and Spatial Planning, comes to see how the construction is doing.

Assen is part of the so-called Novex area of Groningen-Assen region. That is one of the sixteen areas in the Netherlands where the government works together with provinces, municipalities and water boards on, for example, housing, energy transition and nature restoration.

The agreements made stated that 36,000 homes have to be built in the Groningen-Assen region for 2040. There must also be 28,000 jobs, but at the same time that should not be at the expense of the environment.

For Assen, 1,350 homes in the city center, along the Stadsboulevard and the Havenkwartier will have to be added in fifteen years. One of the projects that are currently being worked on is the former Acmesa factory site, where a residential tower and various homes have been risen last year that are ready or almost ready for habitation.

In addition to the housing project, the King and the Minister also visit the center of Assen. There they visit the Vanderveen department store. The duo will talk to entrepreneurs about the city center of the future, employment, urbanization outside the Randstad and nitrogen.

Where King Wil-Alexander breaks down his working visit after this meeting, Keijzer is not yet ready in Drenthe. On the way back to The Hague, she will visit Meppel, where she will view the plans for a renovation project in the Haveltermade district.
